I shall be on leave in UK in July/mid August. Perhaps it might be better in these circumstances if I were to call on you first, so that we might be able to discuss our joint problems, if only superficially, before you go firm on a date to come out here.

In brief, I would like to touch base with you
(a)
(b)
the possible need to supplement
from Hong Kong records over the

next 12 years the records about
Hong Kong kept in London, so that there will be available in London after 1997 a full set of records for administrative and historical purposes; and
the need to review public records held in Hong Kong to decide what needs to be removed or destroyed.
Obviously, for (a) it will be essential for
you to come out here to see what we have. But the point is, of course, to what extent, if any, do you think that what you have in the FCO and at Kew needs to be supplemented from HK. In this connection, what use do you think will have to be made of records in the UK
(a) for the conduct of official
business with the future SAR Government; and
(b) for studies by researchers of
Colonial history, etc.
