Dear Hanut,

At the last Asia Committee Meeting, I was requested to provide figures relating to the proportion of ethnic Chinese among the Vietnamese refugees in Hong Kong.

Our records show that 98% of the arrivals since 1980 have been ethnic Vietnamese. This is a contrast with 1979, when only 27% of those who came were Vietnamese and the rest Chinese. 23% of the arrivals for the first four months in 1985 have come from North Vietnam, compared with 14% in 1980, 30% in 1981, 20% in 1982, 47% in 1983 and 28% in 1984.

From 1979, that is after the Geneva Conference, up to May 1985, a total of 31,435 ethnic Vietnamese (93.93%) and 2,032 (6.07%) ethnic Chinese have arrived in Hong Kong.

The arrivals for the month of May were 98 ethnic Vietnamese and 44 ethnic Chinese.

I hope the above figures are of interest to the Committee. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you require further information.

With best wishes.
