Thank you for your letter of September 2nd about the Vietnamese
refugees who are in Hong Kong awaiting resettlement. I brought this before the Executive Committee of this organisation at its last meeting.
We understand the difficulty of resettlement;
I was asked,
however, to raise with you the point of the possibility of negociation with other
countries. Why is not the United Kingdon allowing a proportion of the refugees into this country? Are not other countries waiting to see what the UK will do?
Might not other countries, particularly possibly Commonwealth countries, expecting the UK to give a lead on this? Is this already under discussion with
the UNHCR? And I am sure that it is on the agenda at the Commonweal th
Conference in Nassau,
