Dear Harriet,
Meeting of Asia Committee,
British Refugee Council held on 17 September, 1985
At the above meeting, the Chairman requested for further information on ex-China Vietnamese refugees. As at 15 October 1985, a total of 12,783 ex-China VRS have come to Hong Kong from China since 1975 and been repatriated. In addition, there are 102 such VRS who have come and are still remaining in Hong Kong, pending processing for repatriation. Besides, there have also been about 500 Vietnamese who have come from China but departed Hong Kong voluntarily for other destinations; these are transittees of whom detailed examinations to establish their identity have not been undertaken by Hong Kong Immigration Department.
Vietnamese refugees (VRS) who have been accepted by the local governments in China for settling in the state farms where they have been registered for permanent residence are all regarded to have 'settled' in China irrespective of the length of stay in the country.
I hope that the Committee will find the above information interesting and should you require further details, please feel free to contact me again.
