Allow me to thank you very sincerely for having received me so kindly on Wednesday 5 June, at a particularly busy moment for you and your colleagues in the Foreign Office, to talk about the refugee situation in Hong Kong.
I found our discussion most useful, having just recently visited Hong Kong and seen for myself the need for renewed efforts to find durable solutions for the refugees there, many of whom have been waiting for several years for a chance to start life afresh outside a camp environment.
It was indeed encouraging to find how closely our views coincide on this issue. I was happy to learn both from you and your colleague David Waddington at the Home Office that the recommendations of the SCORRI Report were being given positive and constructive consideration, both as regards refugees with family links in the U.K. and those whom we describe as "long-stayers".
I am therefore looking forward with the greatest interest to hearing the Government's response to Parliament on the report, convinced as I am that this will open up new perspectives for many hundreds of refugees in both open and closed camps in Hong Kong, and in other parts of South-East Asia.
You were kind enough to say that my visit to London was timely. May I say that it was also most pleasant, thanks to your hospitality in hosting the exquisite luncheon at Lancaster House for me and my colleagues, and to your making it possible for me to renew my friendship with Sir Edward Youde, who was my host in Hong Kong less than a month ago.
In reiterating my gratitude for having arranged this visit, I remain,
with warmed repards
Yours sincerely,
Adferthing
Poul Hartling
