STRESS AND THE PSYCHIATRIC PROBLEMS OF VIETNAMESE REFUGEES
I.
INTRODUCTION
The Ockenden Venture has become increasingly conscious of the developing problem of stress among Vietnamese refugees which has manifested itself over the medium term now that the initial period of attempted resettle- ment after arrival in this country was transpired. A former local authority Health Administrator and a psychiatric nurse have been appointed to undertake first, crisis support for specific cases and second, plans for a longer term support.
A discussion paper was prepared for consideration at a meeting of interested parties convened by the Voluntary Services Unit at the Home Office on 12 July 1984, following which Ockenden agreed to prepare a further paper in an effort to identify the problem and to draw up a pilot scheme for a short-stay centre and thus to identify some of the practical problems involved.
The attached papers are submitted as further evidence of the need and describe immediate endeavours to meet them.
