Dew Hall,

DUTCH REFUGEE QUOTA: RESETTLEMENT OF REFUGEES FROM HONG KONG

Thank you for your letter of 13 November to UND about Mrs Virginia Korte's proposal that the number of refugees invited to settle in the Netherlands each year should be doubled to 500.

1.

2.

We realise that any formal request to the Dutch Authorities to accept additional numbers of refugees from Hong Kong must come from UNHCR (your telno 308 of 27 September and Ken Woodhouse's te lex of 16 October (copy enclosed) refer). However, before we ask UNHCR to approach the Dutch Authorities, it would be very help ful if you could try to find out whether the increased quota of 500, if it is eventually approved by the Cabinet, has already been earmarked. for specific categories or groups of refugees, or whether the Dutch Government would be prepared consider UNHCR's recommendations

as to how it should be filled.
