We have heard

no news recently about the Swedish position. Both your

telno 376 of 9 October,

October, and Ken Woodhouse's telex of 16 October, said that Feldmann had undertaken to approach the Swedes. It would be hel

be helpful if you could ask him about this when have an opportunity.

you next

of the remaining countries which we have approached, Switzerland and Spain have n ow formally said

that they cannot help; Greece, Iceland and Ireland have still not replied, but seen unlikely to take any.

Finally, I would only add that, in my own experience, Feldmann's remarks need to be treated with some caution: they are usually motivated by good in ten tions, but do not always lead to concrete results (cf para 4 above). If, as

Ken Woodhouse reported after his visit to Geneva, Feldmann is shortly to be replaced, may I suggest that you try to ensure that he briefs his successor (do you know who this will be?) fully on the problem before departing, SO that there is some continuity in UNCHR' S approach. Otherwise I fear that much of the momen tum will be lost.
