OVERSEAS CHINESE: VISA REQUIREMENTS FOR TRAVEL TO THE PRC
1. I enclose a Xinhua despatch of 26 July announcing that overseas Chinese residents abroad may now visit China without entry visas or exit permits.
2.
On the one hand, this is certainly part of a wider Chinese campaign to be nice to overseas Chinese in order to re-build confidence in the motherland among Chinese communities the world over in the hope that the flow of overseas Chinese investment will increase. On the other hand it may also have been prompted by the sheer weight of numbers of overseas Chinese now visiting China each year in an effort to reduce some of the burdens on China's strained immigration facilities.
May I leave it to you and Chris Wood to copy this letter and its enclosure to whoever may have an interest in it in both London and Hong Kong?
