Description of the UK common format passport

ANNEX

The new passport is burgundy in colour with

a soft cover. It is approximately 12.5 cm x 8.75 cm,

compared with 15 cm x 10 cm for the present

passport. Its front cover bears the Royal Coat of

Arms as well as the markings of Great Britain and the

European Community.

The data page is on the back inside cover.

Its format conforms to the International Civil

Aviation Organisation's specifications for machine

readable passports. The machine readable element

comprises two lines of optical codes across the

bottom of the page. The information contained in the

two lines is summarised as follows

First line

a letter identifying the type of travel

document;

an internationally agreed code identifying

the country of issue;

the holder's name (surname followed by

forename).
