Mr James Pawsey has asked the following PQ: "To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and
Commonwealth Affairs if he will list his Department's principal achievements since 1979; and if he will list separately the achievements with respect to Overseas Development".

Fortunately, similar questions were asked by Mr Murphy in 1984 and 1983 (Hansard extracts attached). It is therefore only necessary in the reply to Mr Pawsey to cover achievements since May last year.

I attach a draft reply which is based on the answers to Mr Murphy and material produced for the Prime Minister at the end of last year for use with the Press. APD are producing the section on Overseas Development separately.

I should be grateful for your comments on the draft by 1500 hours tomorrow (22 March). Needless to say, any proposals for the insertion of additional points will need to be both of fairly major importance and drafted succinctly.
