UK/ROK bilateral matters (ROK to lead)

2.

The above looks a remarkably long agenda to be covered in one day. But in practice subjects are unlikely to be covered in much depth. Briefs should therefore be as concise as possible, concentrating only on the essential points but in as forthcoming a manner as possible.

The object is to make the Koreans feel that we are confiding in them on major issues. We have good political relations but they need constant nurturing. South Korea is a country of increasing commercial importance to us. The Korean President will visit London in April next year and the Prime Minister will visit Seoul the following month - neither visit has yet been made public.

I would be grateful if four final / of the briefs in the usual format could reach FED by noon on 13 November. I would also be grateful if you or a desk officer could be available for 10-15 minutes on 18 November to assist Dr Wilson with your subjects. We would telephone a warning a few minutes in advance.
