PRIME MINISTER'S MEETING WITH PREMIER ZHAO ZIYANG IN NEW YORK ON
THURSDAY 24 OCTOBER
The Prime Minister met the Chinese Premier this morning. Zhao Ziyang was accompanied by Qian Chi Chen (Vice Foreign Minister) and Bai Mei Ching (Head of the Premier's Office) and several others. Sir Antony Acland was also present.

The Prime Minister welcomed the announcement of The Queen's visit. She hoped everyone in China was pleased. She knew that The Queen herself was greatly looking forward to the visit. Prime Minister continued that she understood from Mr. Lee Kuan Yew that Deng Xiaoping was in excellent form. We were hoping that Hu Yaobang would take up her invitation to him to visit Britain next year. She hoped that the Premier would give both of them her warmest regards.

Deng was very fit and had been swimming an hour a day during the summer. It was not yet possible for Hu to propose dates for his visit. China was eagerly looking forward to The Queen's visit, which was being actively prepared. very much enjoyed his own visit to Britain. He pointed out to the Prime Minister that he was wearing one of the Turnbull and Asser ties which she had given him in June.

The Prime Minister asked if Premier Zhao Ziyang was satisfied with the way the Hong Kong Agreement was functioning. Zhao Ziyang said that it was working better than the Chinese had expected.
