VISIT BY THE PUS TO THE FAR EAST
1. The PUS is visiting Hong Kong, China, Japan and Korea from 7 to 23 June. I should be grateful for five copies of briefs for the China and Japan visits, in final form on pink and white to reach me by close of play Wednesday 29 May. Briefing should be in the usual form with Points to Make and short Background Notes; accompanying documents should be kept to the minimum. Briefing on general subjects with which the PUS is familiar can be kept to a list of bull points. Departments will have seen Peking telno 775 and Tokyo telno 384 with background to this requirement.
Briefing requirements are as shown on the attached lists. You should also follow the headings and numbering given.
2.
3. HKD will be commissioning briefs for the Hong Kong visit separately. FED will initiate drafting on the large majority of the Korea briefs and clear with departments as necessary.
4. I apologise for the short notice given for this briefing requirement, but the need for the PUS to see the briefs in good time and the competing attraction of Zhao Ziyang's visit mean that this briefing deadline is a real one. Some of the briefing may require amendment in the light of Zhao's visit, but this will have to be done by postscripts rather than deferral of the deadline.
