subsequently renounces or is deprived of BDTC status before

30 June 1997 will not meet this requirement, and cannot therefore

retain BN(0) status beyond that date. Article 4(3) cannot

operate so as to render a person stateless. Under section 12(3)

of the Band Do 198 and 40(5) a person may not respectively renounce

if

deprived of British citizenship if he would thereby be rendered

stateless. Section 24 and 40(10) of the BNA 1981 apply these

provisions to BDTCs. Thus a BDTC who has no other citizenship,

and who acquires BN(0) status, cannot renounce or be deprived of

alsa his BDTC status since under Article 4(3) he would now base his

BN(0) status and would thereby be rendered stateless.
