(£) Mr Narajan concluded by saying that his community felt that

HMG's position was overly rigid, and that the assurances given by

Lady Young were too vague.

He asked that I should report our

conversation to Mr Luce. I said that the Indians should not feel

that the Government were unsympathetic to their

their position. Their

concerns were understood. I could not however hold out any hope

that right of abode in the UK could be granted to them as a group.
