During our debate on the Second Reading of the Hong Kong Bill you asked me to lay a copy of the Chinese nationality law in the Library of the House.
I am arranging for a copy of an "unofficial translation" of the law published by the official Chinese News Agency Xinhau on 14 September 1980 to be laid in the Library. I enclose a copy for your information.
You will note that Article 4 states that any person born in China whose parents are Chinese nationals or one of whose parents is a Chinese national has Chinese nationality, and Article 5 states that, with certain exceptions, any persons born abroad whose parents are Chinese nationals or one of whose parents is a Chinese national has Chinese nationality.
