Thank you for your letter of 13 February. your recent visit to Peking was so successful.

I am glad that

I too was sorry that you were not able to attend the Second Reading of the Hong Kong Bill in the House, although I of course perfectly understand the reasons. Our debate, poorer for your absence, and that of Murray Maclehose who was unfortunately indisposed, nevertheless went well and I am happy to say that the Bill progressed smoothly on to its Committee stage.

I understand that you will be in London for the Third Reading of the Bill and I look forward to seeing you then.
