(j) CONCLUSION

CONFIDENTIAL

I hope I have dealt with all the major concerns raised by hon

and rt hon Members in this debate. If I have not we will have

a further and more detailed opportunity to discuss them at the committee stage.

по

I think I can conclude that as the agreement was acceptable to

the House, SO this Bill which will enable the Government to

ratify the agreement is broadly acceptable to the House. There

is no disagreement that we should terminate sovereignty and

jurisdiction over Hong Kong on 1 July 1997, and there i s

disagreement about the need to legislate on nationality the

adaptation of 1 aw and to provide diplomatic privileges and immunities

the Chinese members of the Joint Liaison Group.

disagreements as to how we should meet these

but I hope I have explained satisfactorily why the Government has adopted the approach it has in this Bill.

I hope that the House will now give the Bill a Second Reading.
