BACKGROUND

October.
Mr Renton visited Hong Kong between 27 and 31 During his visit he held discussions with the Governor, senior Hong Kong Government officials and Executive Council. He visited the British Trade Commission and met a number of Hong Kong businessmen. He also attended the opening of the new session of the Legislative Council, the first session with elected members and the first in the new Legislative Council building. He toured one of the urban areas of Hong Kong and attended a meeting of the Kwun Tong District Board. He s aw recent major developments in
in the territory by helicopter, and visited a refugee camp.

On 31 October, en route from Hong Kong to Jakarta (which Mr Renton visited between 31 October and 4 November), he paid a
brief stopover visit to Singapore and held discussions with the
Singaporean Minister of State for Health and Foreign Mr Yeo Cheow Tong.
