The sub-Committee felt that it would be premature to endorse at this stage the proposed visit to Turkey (6) particularly given the parallel recommendation that the Turkish Prime Minister be invited to Britain during 1986.

The sub-Committee noted that the Secretary of State was planning to visit the Gulf (and possibly Jordan) during the Christmas Recess and the sub-Continent during the Easter Recess.

The sub-Committee attached importance to a Minister visiting Greece (10), possibly in the Spring. It noted that the level of the visit would depend on the decisions which Ministers were due to take on the Planning Paper on Greece. If the Secretary of State were to go, the visit could be combined with one to Yugoslavia (2). We had a keen interest in helping the Yugoslavs maintain their links with the West and they too attached importance to those links. A visit in 1986 would fit the bi-annual pattern. It would also complete the series of visits made to other East Euro- pean countries in early 1985.

The sub-Committee noted that the Secretary of State would be attending the Economic Summit in Tokyo in early May and thought it highly desirable that the Secretary of State should take the opportunity to visit Australia and New Zealand (11) on his way back. These countries were important for wider Western security interests and recent nuclear issues had reminded us that their attitudes could not be taken for granted. While Royal visits were helpful in their way and visits by other Ministers helped in particular areas of business, a visit by the Secretary of State would be of great value in showing the substantive importance Government attached to Australian and New Zealand policies.

The sub-Committee was conscious of the need to pay due
attention to the neutrals. Switzerland (3) was also important in the
context of our contacts with the Argentinians. We shared arms sales interests. A visit by the Secretary of State in the Summer, two years after M. Aubert's to the UK, would be timely.
