5.6 Historic Preservation

in San Tin Village

Historic Preservation in its most advanced state includes three main areas of concern.

A. Structural Restoration

This effort will concentrate on the restoration and ongoing maintenance of major architectural monuments considered of inestimable value by Government's Antiquities Board. These in- clude:

a) Tai Fu Ti - A Mandarin House;

b) Man Lung Fung - A Tze Tong; and

c) Other Tongs, Etc. considered of primary community, but of secondary regional importance.

B. Area Improvements

This effort will concentrate on grounds, squares, streets and other spaces of historic and townscape importance which should be pre- served and enhanced, Linkages between structures in (A) will be considered most heavily. These include:

a) Tai Fu Ti Garden and its surrounding "Li

Chi" groves;

b) the main Tze Tong plaza area; and

c) Special main streets and other unique village

square and townscape elements.

C. Sub-village Zone Renovations

This effort will be towards an ultimate preserva- tion of the general village area, upgrading old village houses and renovating those in ruin.

After Use

Revitalization

Efforts toward historic preservation will be geared toward village rehabilitation*, tourist- related activities, Hong Kong-residental hostel afteruses, and accommodations for convales- cents and the elderly.

A. Tourism: Specific tours through the old village would be arranged with a specified routing to include major historic structures. B. Hostels: Basic accommodation for visitors in old village houses would be available in special neighbourhoods for persons or groups wishing to spend a night in the old village.

C. Old People's Accommodation: Funds for housing old people could at the same time be channeled into preservation by improving special old village neighbourhoods for this afteruse.

*It should be noted here that San Tin Main Village will remain very much the ancestral home and place of residence for many members of the Man Clan after full New Town implementation. The Man Family will always retain control over afteruses within their village, under the proviso that such uses be consistent with their traditional village customs, architectural traditions and heritage. Planning control over San Tin Main Village will be maintained by the Tun Yu Tong Foundation.

5.7 Post Office

The existing San Tin Post Office serves an essentially rural population with emphasis on P.O. Boxes and basic services. A replacement post office is envisaged with a floor area allowance of 1,400 square metres, dependent on ultimate requirements and Government post office planning decisions. Access, storage, and primary sorting spaces will be provided as re- quired.

A new main post office facility would be pro- vided in the village commercial end of the "old/ new" town centre spine. Pillar boxes for posting would be located in all neighbourhood and community centres.
