Agriculture

4.1 Introduction

Agriculture in San Tin is to be developed as a non-polluting, land intensive, controlled land use. A total restructuring or rationalization of activity and land is to be carried out. The two basic forms for agriculture as now planned are dry land uses south of Castle Peak Road, and Pond Farming to the north.

4.2 Dryland Farming

These areas are confined to market gardening, livestock production, and an active nursery industry.

4.2.1

Market Gardens

These farms are restricted to the fertile valley floor areas, changing present worm ponds and fish ponds to a dryland, more economic use. A total of 125 farms will be created, each of about 1 acre, supporting a single family.

4.2.2

Livestock Rearing

Intensive livestock rearing areas will include 2 types of pig production units, and 3 types of chicken production areas. These total about 350 farms, located in upper valley sloping sites for controlled drainage reason, and access- ability. Waste treatment facilities will be pro- vided for the estimated eventual livestock population of 21,500 pigs and 670,000 chickens.

4.2.3

Nursery Industry

An area of 23.4 ha. is set aside as an intensive plant production nursery. It will cater to meeting San Tin New Town landscape require- ments, as well as providing a much needed major plant production area for Hong Kong as a whole. San Tin programmes alone will require an estimated 870,000 plants to fulfil landscape proposals in the New Town. Intensive produc- tion areas will cover 10 ha, while the remaining area will serve as field growing and tree bank areas. Only 3.34 ha. of the total would be re- quired as full time production land for the San Tin Development, leaving 85% of nursery capacity to serve the Hong Kong Market.

4.3 Fishpond Farming

The areas west of San Tin Village and the whole of the closed zone would be utilized as fish pond production areas. Roughly half of these would be brackish/tidal ponds; the other half would be fed by the fresh water drainage/lake system from upland development areas. Ponds would average 1.5-4.0 ha, in area, and about 2m. in depth. Dredge material would be used to create bunding; excess materials would be utilized in creation of the town park.

will

Agricultural Cooperative Associations act to establish and enforce total watershed pollution controls, waste treatment supervision and rural marketing system management. Alter- native energy and waste recycling are also to be investigated.
