HONG KONG PROFILE: THE ENGLISH SPEAKING UNION

Andy itech son.

As you requested, I spoke to Mr Griffiths this afternoon. He told me that Hong Kong Profile had offered the ESU a great deal of assistance in setting up their seminar, which is due to take place in Hong Kong in December. The two journalists had hoped to interview you before your visit to Hong Kong but now that has not been possible would be quite happy to see you in Hong Kong or shortly after your return.

I told Mr Griffiths that I would convey that

information to you and that we would take a look at your programme for Hong Kong to see whether it would be possible. I made no promises. I undertook to let him know soon.

Before I got through to Mr Griffiths I spoke to Sir Antony Buck and told him what I was planning to do. He was extremely grateful and said that he had previously spoken to the Secretary of State about this proposal and

I said that it had the Secretary of State's approval. have also spoken to Mr Galsworthy, in Hong Kong Department, whose advice remains the same ie that Hong Kong Profile is relatively small beer and that if you give an interview to them you will have to give interviews to a large number of other publications to avoid charges of discrimination.

If you decide that you wish to go ahead with this, we will have to send a telegram to the Governor informing him and seeking to identify a space in your programme.
