VISIT BY MR RENTON TO SOUTH EAST ASIA

Mr Renton has seen your submission of 12 September, together with Mr Long's minute of 16 September underlining the importance of Mr Renton's presence in London for the visit of the Moroccan Foreign Minister.
2.
FOR
He has decided that it would be better not to include a visit to Thailand at this stage, but to leave London a day earlier than originally proposed (ie Saturday 26 October rather than Sunday 27 October) in order to spend an extra day in Hong Kong. He considers that, since Hong Kong has shown so much interest in the ministerial changes at the FCO, and he has little recent experience of Hong Kong, it would be right to pay a full and thorough visit.
3.
As far as Indonesia is concerned, Mr Renton accepts the need to ensure that there is adequate bilateral content to his visit. He also takes NENAD's point about the Moroccans. He suggests that he leaves Hong Kong early enough on Thursday 31 October
(ie at 0915) to arrive in Jakarta in time to pay at least one bilateral call that evening. One or two further calls could then be fitted in on Friday 1 November, before the Heads of Mission Conference, and late in the afternoon, as necessary. This would allow him to leave Jakarta for London, as planned, on the evening of 3 November, getting him into Heathrow in time both to attend the Secretary of State's talks with Dr Filali at 11 am on 4 November, and to take the Foreign Minister to the theatre that evening.
