Brunei; Malaysia

8.

The Prime Minister is concerned that we should maintain the relationship built up by the Sultan's visit here in January/February 1985 and by her visit to Brunei in April 1985. We should, therefore, keep under review the possible need for an FCO Ministerial visit in the Autumn. If a visit were called for it could be brief, probably one day.

9. At present, I see no need for Mr Luce to visit Malaysia in the Autumn (particularly since Mr Channon will be going in July) but given the unpredictability of our bilateral relations we should not preclude this.

Modalities

10. If Mr Luce approves my recommendations and the visits are authorised I will ask Mr Staples and Mr Donald to put proposals, on an informal basis, to their host Governments and seek detailed recommendations for programmes.
