the Trade Ministry, and a day spent at the Thai/Cambodia

We would ask Mr Staples to explore the possibility
of a call on the King.
Indonesia
6. A visit by Mr Luce to Indonesia on his way back from Hong Kong
from 30/31 October till 4/5 November would serve three principal
ends:
(a) to maintain the momentum of Anglo-Indonesian
relations generated by the Prime Minister's
visit in April 1985;
(b) to open a regional Heads of Mission Conference;
(c) to participate briefly in the annual meeting
in Yogjakarta of the Anglo-Indonesia Joint
Working Party (JWP) on bilateral trade/economic
issues.
7. I have consulted Mr Donald in Jakarta who has welcomed the proposal
which he thinks would suit the Indonesians well (his teleletter to me
of 7 May) though the precise dates he has proposed need some 'rejigging
in the light of what I understand to be Mr Luce's wish to attend the
opening of the session of the Hong Kong Legislative Council on
30 October. Mr Luce's visit which would overlap that of a UK investment
mission led by Lord Remnant (3-8 November), should clearly demonstrate
our earnest to follow up the Prime Minister's visit, developing
contacts both in the political and commercial spheres. Mr Channon is
also proposing to visit Indonesia in July.
