Mr Luce originally proposed combining his visit to Hong Kong with a visit to Jakarta for the SEAD Heads of Mission Conference in order to avoid making three separate trips to the Far East/South East Asia within the space of a few months. He is content to postpone a visit to Indonesia and other ASEAN countries until early 1986; indeed, the posts concerned might prefer this, since Mr Heseltine as well as the Inspectorate are now planning visits to the region in late October/early November. But Mr Luce continues to believe that he should visit Indonesia (and perhaps Brunei and Malaysia) before too long. As well as chairing a Heads of Mission Conference, he would seek to capitalise on the impact of the Prime Minister's visit, fulfil her wish that her visit be followed up by other Ministers, and maintain regular contact with ASEAN leaders.
