PROGRAMME : Mr Luce will spend two days in Peking meeting
with Foreign Minister Wu Xueqian, Vice Minister Zhou Nan
and other Chinese leaders. A further three days will occupy
visits to the newly opened Consulate General's offices in
Shanghai, British business interests and Chinese Provincial
leaders in both Shanghai and Canton.
BACKGROUND : This will be the first visit to China by an
FCO Minister following ratification of the Joint Declaration
on Hong Kong and will serve to emphasise the importance both
countries attach to our rapidly developing relations.
LIKELY SUBJECTS OF DISCUSSION
In China Mr Luce's talks
with Vice Minister Zhou Nan are expected to cover a range of
bilateral and international issues of mutual interest,
including economic and commercial relations and Hong Kong.
