In the first half of 1985, 5.4 million trips were made by Hong Kong residents to China, representing an increase of 50% over the first half of 1984. No
statistical breakdown in terms of destinations within China is available, but because of the geographical proximity of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone (SSEZ) the development of holiday resort facilities there it is believed that the SSEZ is now the principal destination for a sizeable proportion of the trips made by Hong Kong residents to China. Some Hong Kong residents make frequent shopping trips to the SSEZ because of the lower
prices there for some foodstuffs and other products.

Also in the first half of 1985, there were around 48,000 trips made by Chinese residents to Hong Kong, representing an increase of 56% over the first half of 1984. About half of these trips were in the form of group tours, paid for by the visitors' relatives in Hong Kong. The rest consisted of two-way permit holders coming
