Question:
Is the Government satisfied with its service with regard to the placing of disabled persons in full-time employment, and are there any plans to expedite placement of the disabled?
Sir,
The Government agency concerned is the
Selective Placement Service which was established within
the Labour Department in July 1980 with the objective of
providing job placement assistance to blind, deaf and
otherwise physically handicapped persons seeking
employment. Up to September of this year, the SPS has
registered or reregistered some 8,000 job-seekers and
has made 3,300 placements, a placement rate of
approximately 41%.
Placement officers of the SPS make regular
visits to employers both to explain to them the working ability of the disabled and to identify jobs which are suitable for disabled persons. The Service has also
produced five pamphlets, dealing with different kinds of
disability to advise prospective employers on how to
