The Island Line will open to passenger service
between Admiralty and Chai Wan on 31 May 1985, some 5 weeks ahead of schedule. It will be completed within the budget of $11 billion.
The M.T.R. is the only mass transit system in
the world whose unsubsidised fare revenues are sufficient
to cover all costs, including depreciation, plus a useful operating profit margin. Members will join me in
congratulating the board, management and staff for competently managing for another year what is the most densely utilised mass transit railway in the world.
