Supplementary to Question No. 12 in the
Legislative Council on 13 March 1985
Mr. So asked in Cantonese :
閣下可否告知本局公衆要求保留這棵老 榕樹主要的理由是甚麼?同時,政府決定出 售這幅地曾經小心考慮到背景又是甚麼?
(The following is the interpretation of what Mr. So asked.)
Sir, can Government inform this Council what is the major reason for the public
request for retaining this old banyan tree and what are the backgrounds that
Government has seriously considered before allowing the sale of the lot ?
Secretary for Lands and Works : The reasons put forward for the preservation
of the tree of course is that it is a very old tree (laughter) and in considering
whether the site should be used for commercial/residential purposes, the factors
considered would be the characteristics of Stanley development, demand for
residential/commercial development in that area, and of course, the value of the
site.
Mr. So asked in Cantonese :
因為這棵是老樹,就決定延遲出售及考慮 重新檢討,這項決定會不會過於輕率呢?
(The following is the interpretation of what Mr. So asked.)
Dir, if it is simply because the tree is very old that the sale was delayed and
a review had to be made, would such a decision be too rash ?
Secretary for Lands and Works : - No, the feelings expressed were very strongly
-
expressed and there were fairly wide support for that feeling in Stanley. Not only
that: there was really no great pressure for the sale of the site no one apply
to buy it. (laughter) It was on our programme so we thought a deferral of a
month or so was not too much.
