TITLE OF NEW STATUS TO BE ACQUIRED
BY HONG KONG BDTCs
The Governor informed Members that he had put
nationality
to Ministers their proposal that the new
title for Hong Kong BDTCs should be 'British National:
Overseas'. Ministers were content with the title but,
for the sake of clarity, had suggested that, instead of
using a colon which could imply any British national
overseas, the title should be 'British National
(Overseas)'. (Members
memorandum XCX (85)9 circulated on 10 January). With
Ministers'
he had put this title to
Unofficial Members of the Legislative Council on 10
agreement,
had been advised of this in
January when he briefed them on the Hong Kong Bill.
They had raised no objections.
The next step, subject
to further comments from Members, was for the
Ambassador, Peking to put the title to the Chinese
within the next day or two.

After some discussion, Members confirmed that
they had no objection to 'British National (Overseas)'.
The Governor said that if the title proved acceptable to
the Chinese, Ministers would hope to announce the
proposed title in the Second Reading debate on 21
January. It might then be possible to amend the Hong
