example,
British Citizens who had elected to live oûtside the
United Kingdom did so of their own free will and in full
knowledge of the consequences. In the case of Hong Kong
BDTCs, it was HMG which had decided that the citizenship
rights should be removed. The Governor said that HMG
had stated its intention that no one
should become
consequence of the Agreement. He
stateless as
a
directed that there should be a further reference to the
FCO asking that the position be left open until the
problem had been thoroughly considered and an acceptable
solution had been found.

asked whether non-Chinese
residents would be entitled to apply for United Kingdom
consular protection in Hong Kong. The Deputy Secretary
(General Duties) confirmed that as non-Chinese they
would be entitled to British consular protection. This
point would be made in the adjournment debate.

'British National (Overseas)' passports overseas. The
Chief Secretary said that this point would be made in
