NEGOTIATIONS WITH UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT ON COUNTRY OF ORIGIN ISSUES

The Secretary for Trade and Industry reported

that the final US Customs Regulations to be

published that day failed to meet Hong Kong's

position on knitwear. While there was little hope

of changing the Regulations, the situation could

not be left as it was.

He briefed the Council on

the proposals for dealing with the matter in

in the

future.
