I recommend that the Private Secretary write to Number 10 on

FED agree.

BACKGROUND

3.

We have now completed our first exchanges with the Chinese on the timing and programme for the Prime Minister's visit to Peking.

A B C The Chinese response is recorded in Peking telnos 2736, 2738, 2747

D and 2748. We have also consulted the Governor on the

Prime Minister's programme in Hong Kong. His recommendations are

E contained in Hong Kong telno 3421.

The draft letter to Number 10 is largely self-explanatory. It
