Our Ref. MT/2/01

Mr. I.F.C. Macpherson, OBE, JP,

Commissioner,

Assessment Office,

The Supreme Court,

38 Queensway,

HONG KONG.

21 September 1984

(Dear Ian,)

Many thanks for your letter of the 20th September raising various points of mutual interests.

Speaking for myself, I welcome the idea of being sent a copy of every submission received by your Office. The question of translation presents no problem provided that all major submissions are translated. In case I spot anything of interest in a submission in its original form, I will certainly bring to the notice of Sir Patrick. However, if it is humanly possible, I would like to have two copies of each translated submission as that would facilitate our work.

· At the moment, I am in two minds as to whether we should receive press cuttings and tapes. Some cuttings are just mere reports of people's submissions and opinion, others might express the opinion of pressure groups, individuals and those of columnists. For this reason, I am in two minds how much of these cuttings we should receive and I would rather have a word with Sir Patrick on his arrival before I give you a definite answer. As far as the work of the Assessment Teams is concerned, personally I would like to attend as many of their conferences as possible. In addition, it would be of help that we are given copies of the summaries after the conferences. Again speaking for myself, as far as the use of the computer is concerned, I would rather not have the password and if I want to retrieve any information, I would get in touch with one of the Team Leaders for their assistance.

No definite date of Sir Patrick's arrival is known yet, but I have a feeling that he is going to keep to his original plan to arrive on the 26th.

With kind regards,

SL/ac

Yours sincerely,

Sgd.
