Thank you for your letter of 4 September.
This note in reply
can be an aide memoire of the points I shall raise with you.
(1) Daily fee
On the face of it entirely satisfactory, but difficult to assess full implications. Roughly speaking, £143 a day may turn out to be about £8,000 gross for the whole assignment. This compares with a total of about £5,600 gross as an aggregate of gross College salary + net C.S. pension. But the net gross financial advantage of, say, £2,400 (on the assumption that I lose two months' College salary + pension) will be reduced by tax to (as a 'guestimate') something between £1,300 and £1,400. My financial savings at Oxford will not be large, bearing in mind (for example) that, as a College Fellow, I do not have any meal costs in College.
(2) Expenses in Hong Kong
•
(a) Is it confirmed that the H.K. Government will meet the cost
of the suite reserved in the H.K. Hilton?
(b) Advice from those who know H.K. suggests that $H.K. 300 may prove inadequate if it is intended to cover all meals, laundry, newspapers, (?) taxis, gratuities, and any form of modest 'official' hospitality (e.g. a drink in the suite). Would it be reasonable to ask that:-
i) I should be reimbursed for any official entertainment
I have to provide (or at least be provided with some capacity to offer a drink in my suite)?
(ii) I should be able to call on a H.K. Government car
(other than for purely private purposes)?
'The
(iii) I should be provided, as a contribution to my task with all the appropriate H.K. papers +, say, Times from U.K.?
(3) Travel to and from Hong Kong
I assume that the F.C.O. will be good enough to arrange air- craft reservations and to meet the cost. If I start from London, may I look to the F.C.O. to provide transport to
Heathrow on the day?
