Dear Jane Ann,
176
A quick note to thank you for your letter of 25 October. I am glad to hear that the claims are in order.
The FCO Pay Section has sent me a pay advice pretty promptly in respect of the first claim. Tax and National Insurance have been satisfactorily paid; but, if the Pay Section have any information about how the Pay-Master General is intending to handle my pension deductions, I shall be glad to know. I realize that the FCO may not find it easy to get an answer to that! Since I am writing, I enclose a further letter to Tony, dated 19 November.
I can then write a final letter after my return to Oxford when we have settled what is to be my last day on the FCO books !
I am most grateful to you for your endless trouble over the mail; I am sorry that the Nairne family have had to make such a fuss. My wife has more or less given up using the bag, since letters take much longer than air mail even when speedily handled, but my Secretary will be continuing to use the bag since she is having to keep me in touch with urgent correspondence not directly connected with the College.
I have been finding the assignment fascinating and interesting, particularly since I have been able to listen, as a passive witness, to such a wide variety of discussions. But the difficult and delicate part of our task lies ahead with the preparation of our report.
Every good wish.
Yours ever, Patrick Jaime
