FUTURE OF HONG KONG: TEST OF ACCEPTABILITY; FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS
1.
42
I spoke today to Mr Marshall about Mr Galsworthy's minute to him of 14 August. Mr Marshall suggested that I should address this minute to you in view of his own impending leave.
2. Mr Marshall and I discussed paragraph 5 of Mr Galsworthy's minute of 14 August, which dealt with accommodation and subsistence for the United Kingdom Monitor. He asked me to confirm to you that in the view of Hong Kong Department it would be necessary and appropriate, in the light of the Monitor's functions, for him to occupy a hotel suite. On that basis we propose that the Monitor's subsistence should cover the cost of the suite, together with a further Hong Kong dollars 300 a day for meals.
3. Mr Marshall said that this arrangement was acceptable in principle to Finance Department, and that you would be able to confirm this in writing.
