A number of hon Members have referred to the need to improve
our relations with China. On the political level our relations with
China are excellent, as the preamble to the Joint Declaration makes
clear. I believe that the successful conclusion of the negotiations
provides a firm basis on which our good relations with China can be
developed and given still greater substance.
25. As a result of the successful conclusion of our negotiations
both Britain and Hong Kong are well placed to develop closer
commercial and financial relations with China. Hong Kong's
significance as a base for trade with China is set to increase. hope that businesses both in Britain and in Hong Kong will pursue the commercial opportunities that are being offered.
