By this route, combined knowledge and influence available through this contact will flow into China and out to Asia and the West thus fulfilling the prophecy I have been so bold as to make that in the next century China will provide the most powerful influence on world politics and economies.

In conclusion I plead for a better understanding between the

People of the United Kingdom and of Hong Kong.

Britain has a moral and very real obligation to those of its

people who wish to retain their and their children's nationality.

There are those in Hong Kong who feel that the accident of birth in a British Colony entitles them not only to their name but also

their nationality.

We talk of human rights but it is as well to remember that to many British Subjects you propose to remove one of those rights without their

consent. There is much resentment about the termination of transmissibility

of British Nationality for Hong Kong British Subjects. If this happens it

will create a legacy of discontent, a bitterness likely to sour Britain's

relationship for many years to come.
