There is no basis for the charge that HMG have sold out the people of Hong Kong. Such allegations are harmful and untrue. The interests of the Hong Kong people have been constantly at the forefront of our minds. We have been trying and will continue to try throughout the talks to obtain the best possible deal for Hong Kong which will effectively preserve its prosperity and stability. We are unwavering in seeking a settlement acceptable not only to Britain and China but also to the people of Hong Kong.
