Hong Kong Economy?
27. In excellent shape. Export-led recovery is clearly underway.
In 1983 Hong Kong's exports increased by 26%, and imports by 238. This year's figures even better. Growth rate of over 6% expected in current financial year.
Comment on Jardines Movement to Bermuda?
28. A commercial decision.
Note the company emphasised continued confidence in Hong Kong. There is a good future for Hong Kong as international trading and financial centre.
Hong Kong People Resettling Abroad?
29. Much speculation. Although the number of Hong Kong people leaving in 1983 for permanent residence showed some increase, many explanations. Hong Kong people frequently leave Hong Kong for professional reasons or for educational purposes. Many return ultimately to Hong Kong. HMG remain committed to seeking a settlement on the future of Hong Kong which will provide continuing stability and prosperity for all who live and work there.
Ministerial Involvement in the Talks
30. There are no present plans for British Ministers to join the
talks but the possibility cannot be ruled out if considered desirable at an appropriate time.
