HONG KONG

SPEAKING NOTE

1.

Negotiations between the British and Chinese governments on the

future of Hong Kong are continuing through diplomatic channels in

Peking. The nineteenth round of talks finished yesterday and both sides

once again described them as useful and constructive.

2. The Foreign Secretary is now in Hong Kong in order to consult

opinion there. Tomorrow he will fly on to Peking to continue

discussions with the Chinese Foreign Minister and other Chinese

leaders on all aspects of Hong Kong's future.

3. The British government's aim remains to reach a detailed,

balanced and binding agreement which is acceptable to the British

and Chinese Governments and to the people of Hong Kong.
