Her Majesty's Government remain committed, in the Sino-British talks
on Hong Kong's future, to seek a settlement which will maintain Hong
Kong's stability and prosperity and be acceptable to Parliament, China and the people of Hong Kong. As was made clear by my Honourable Friend the Member for Shoreham to my Honourable Friend
the Member for Christchurch on 26 January, [reference attached]
there is a continuous process of consultation with Hong Kong on all
matters relating to the territory's future. In due course, it will be for Parliament to give its views on the acceptability of arrangements made with the Chinese Government concerning Hong Kong's
future, taking Hong Kong's views into account.

WISHES OF THE PEOPLE OF HONG KONG
The Prime Minister has made clear that the views of the people of Hoing Kong will continue to be taken fully into account in the Sino-British talks.
CONSULTATION WITH THE PEOPLE OF HONG KONG
We are in continuing close touch with Hong Kong views, notably through the Governor and his Executive Council who are well placed to reflect them. There is a wide range of consultative channels in Hong Kong through which people can make their views known. Some of these channels contain an elected element. The question of how the Consultative process can best be pursued is kept under review.
