strengthened. We must remember too that if European governments wish to be

more active in security matters, as is properly our right, we must be ready

to assume the responsibilities that go with this.

Conclusion

45. I have been deliberately selective in my statement to the House. My aim

was to pick out those issues which have been occupying my time and that of

my colleagues over the past few months. But one final word about an

important issue for the next few months, the Economic Summit here in June.

The accent there will be building on the progress made at Williamsburg.

46. Economic recovery is now firmly established in North America. It is

gaining strength elsewhere. The priorities now are to ensure that recovery

is sustained and success achieved in reducing inflation is consolidated.

The Summit will focus on how to strengthen the international trade and

financial system; and will pay particular attention to impediments to

growth. I expect it to address the issue of rolling back protectionism,

the which was a major theme at Williamsburg; and to demonstrate that Summit
