Party has become a cheer leader for policies which would weaken the defence
of this country and the Alliance as a whole. I am struck by how many
speeches this House is subjected to condemning this country's friends and
praising its opponents. But the electorate are not taken in. They cheered
the Labour policies last June - but appropriately it was a Bronx cheer.
And that is the response Labour will continue to get until as Khruschev
used to say "shrimps can whistle".
What may
39. The transatlantic bridge is in fact in good repair, and we as a
government will do our best to keep it that way. Transatlantic differences
should not be ignored, but they need to be seen in perspective.
divide Europe from North America is in no way equal to the continuing
community of interest among the Western democracies. That common interest
is not weakened because, for instance, the United States is developing her
relations with Japan: European governments are and should be doing the
same. Nor is the Alliance weakened by the United States pursuing her
global responsibilities with vigour. On the contrary. The danger to the
Alliance lies not in its members developing other links, but in the
