19. But we in Britain intend to play a full part in encouraging that
broader dialogue. We have already made a real start. As my Hon Friend, Mr
Whitney, said here on 9 March our aim is to increase the range and
frequency of the Government's contacts with the Soviet leadership.
this year I have had a second meeting with Mr Gromyko,I plan to go to
Moscow in July. The visit my Rt Hon Friend the Prime Minister paid to
Hungary in January helped to underline the importance of the Eastern
European countries in this process. And when the Prime Minister saw Mr
Chernenko in Moscow she expressed the hope that their meeting would lead to
other high level contacts. As a part of this dialogue, Mr Gromyko's
Deputy, Mr Kornienko, will be visiting London next week for consultations
with my Hon Friend the Hon Member for Edinburgh Pentlands [Mr Rifkind).
20. Our purpose, in short, is to keep open channels of communication
between our two Governments. And if possible we want to increase their
